Alexis's Third Birthday Party - Dora the Explorer

Can you believe she is three already? Alexis asked for a Dora party this year. We started her party with giant Dora coloring pages while we waited for everyone to arrive. We ended up with nine kids this time. No one from my family ever RSVPs so I never know how many to plan for - drives me crazy!

After everyone arrived, we looked in the treasure chest Dora had found (treasure chest borrowed from Mom, Backpack borrowed from Skilea, my niece)

only to discover . . .

Swiper had swipped the treasure! All that was left in the treasure chest was empty loot bags. We checked with Map to see if he had any clues. Map had a note for us that said "Swiper took our treasure, oh no! Where did he go? Ask around to see if anyone knows. Say 'Swiper, Swiper where could he be? Can anyone help me?"

The adults were given additional Maps with more clues on it and whenever the children said the saying above they read their numbered clue for the children to hunt for that part of the missing treasure.

Clue # 1 "Round and round he went, I was swiper boucing up and down." I found Dora and Diego Spinning Tops at the $1 store and these were hidden under the trampoline.

Clue #2 "Swiper? I saw him. He was being sneaky and crafty. Where do you think he has been?" Under the craft table was hidden individual crafts for their loot bags (found on sale at Micheals for 50 cents each) plus we made bracelets with foam beds (Found those at Wal-mart for $5.)

Then we took a break from our treasure hunt because lunch had arrived.

Clue # 3 - "I saw Swiper under a tree. He was playing games with me!" In a tree on the other side of the house I hid Dora Go Fish and Crazy Eight card sets (also found for 50 cents at Michael Crafts).

Clue #4 - "Birthday wishes I saw Swiper make. He was making happy wishes with a birthday cake." The final treasure was hidden under the cake table. (Dora Blowouts left over from Skilea's Dora party two years ago.)

Then it was time for the cake and present opening.

I posted more pictures to Facebook from the party along with other pictures from September. You can see those here.

Plus her three year photos can be seen here.

Have a great rest of the week!

Just for you Kim . . .

I know, I know, Kim reminded I hadn't updated this in a while. Not sure if truthfully it is because I joined the Facebook bandwagon with everyone else or maybe I have just been a little too overwhelmed with life to process all the changes going on around me to really write about them. I have to keep reminding myself that God is there not just on the mountains but in the valleys too.

I promised Kim Easter pics so I will share a few of those. ;)

My bright happy children! OK, maybe not. I can't even remember what she was upset about.

This is one of my favorite pictures of him!

The infamous pole in the middle of our chapel.

Easter egg hunt at church.

Major Chuck took this one.

I'm tired . . .

Mom update: She called a couple of hours ago to tell me she is back in the hospital because she was having trouble breathing again.

I can't believe I worked about 87 hours between Wednesday of last week and Thursday of this week. Youth Councils is always a tiring weekend for me but when you sandwich it between major network problems it makes for one long week. Youth Councils was a great event though. Since I am hiding behind the computer somewhere the entire weekend, I don't get to take many pics, but I did get a few.

This is from Melinda and I's midnight MediaShout lesson. :D

The Praise Band rehearsing on Friday morning. They were awesome!

These pictures I borrowed. My boss took these ones:
OneTimeBlind - check them out!!! They present an amazing message in a very real way.

The presentation from the Divisional Worship Arts Team was probably one of the most unique things I have seen in a long time. This was done using just black lights and white gloves.

There were lots of great presentations, way too many to mention here but I uploaded lots and lots and lots more pictures (over 500 from three different photographers) to a Wal-mart photo group. You can check them out here: http://photos.walmart.com/groups/mwvevents. You have to have a  Wal-mart photo account to see them but it is free.

This is how my husband spent most of the weekend. (Thanks Jeff for taking this pic for me!)

The rest of the week is pretty much a blur of stress and fixing network equipment.

Enough about work . . .how about a soccer update?

I forgot to tell you that during the first game my son took himself out of the game twice for a water break. So I snapped this at practice this week.

He is doing a little better with understanding the concepts of the game though, I think.

They were pretty outmatched at the game two weeks ago but they did pretty good against the team today.
Warming up . . .

Defense!

Shane cheering after he scored a goal. He tells me he scored three during the game but I only actually saw one so I don't know. (Yes, I was watching the entire time; at least I thought I was.)

After the game we went to a birthday party.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Niya!

OK - if you are still reading, you deserve a funny story. . .

I used to do this little saying with Shane when he was younger. It started out he would repeat after me and then eventually evolved so I would do one line and he would do the next. It went like this:

I love you.
I love you more.
I love you the most.
I love you half way to the moon.
I love you all the way to the moon.
I love you all the way to the moon and back.
No, I love YOU all the way to the moon and back (he always emphasized this and it was really cute.)

So I started teaching Alexis this and we had been through it a couple of times. Sunday after being away from her all weekend, I was telling it to her. She repeated after me when I said I love you and then when I said I love you more. Then I said I love you most to which she replied:

"I love you most of the time."

Not the week I had planned

I had one of those "it is amazing the difference a week makes" kind of weeks. While we were getting ready for church on Sunday, I got a call from my Mom's husband. He asked how I was to which I responded "that depends on why you are calling" since he usually only calls me when Mom is in the hospital. Late Saturday night they took her to the ER by ambulance because she was having chest pains and difficulty breathing. She was admitted to ICU where they determined that her pneumonia had returned and attributed the chest pains to that. The on-call doctor told her that they didn't think it was heart related but would do a stress test just in case on Monday. When I spoke to her after church on Sunday she said that they had told her they had pretty much ruled out heart problems. I called her at lunch time on Monday and there wasn't any answer in her room so I called the nurses station and she was still at the stress test. So I called her on my home again and she said thought she would be going home that evening after the results of the stress tests came back. Around 7, she called to say that she was still there and that the stress test showed some blockage but that the doctor thought they would probably just be able to treat it with medicine and that they would do a cardiac catheterization on Tuesday to determine the amount of blockage. So in a matter of a day the diagnosis went from "already ruled out heart problems" to "some blockage but treatable with medicine".

During break on Tuesday, I got a call from my Mom's husband again. We had now gone from "some blockage but likely treatable with medicine" to "one artery has significant blockage and she will have to have heart surgery". He said she had to be moved to another hospital for the surgery and was supposed be moved that day and have the surgery the next. I asked him if I needed to come home and he said she will want you here. My week was pretty well planned out already. I just hired a new employee and had only had one day to train him. I had just gotten the stuff I needed to get started with Youth Councils preparation. But despite all of that, I was on the road to WV by 12:30. When I arrived about 4 p.m. they still had not moved her to the other hospital so we waited. The other hospital told her they did not have a bed for her and to call back at 7:30 p.m. The heart doctor was doing evening rounds so we called him in the room and he said that she would still be having the surgery on Wednesday and answered some other questions I had. They were supposed to kick us out of ICU at 7 because visiting hours were over but we waited around to find out what was going on. The nurse comes back in and says still no bed for her at the other hospital and that they had to call at 8 a.m. to find out if they would have one then. Mom was very upset.

We arrive at the hospital at 8 a.m. They won't let us in the room because visiting hours don't start until 11 in ICU. We go have breakfast then come back and wait. I call the office, check my e-mail and do some other work. Mom finally calls about 9:30 and they still don't have a room for her. The hospital will call if something opens up later. Still can't get in until 11 a.m. so I do some more work. Finally get in the room and we wait some more. We spent the rest of the day waiting for the hospital to call and not having any clue how we got from "needs to have surgery tomorrow" to "no room" in the inn. At 5:30, we over hear the nurse take a call that they thought they had a bed but to call back at 7:30 to be sure. An hour later, the nurse comes in and tells us that the call was about her room. We had to leave at 7 because visiting hours were over. At 8, we get the call from my Mom, still no room; call again in the morning.

Finally, at 8:30 on Thursday we got the call that they had a bed for her and got ready to meet her at Morgantown but still did not know when the surgery would be. She got there around 10:30 or so, they checked her in and starting preparing her for surgery. The nurse said she had 70 to 80 percent blockage. About 2, they finally took her downstairs and did the surgery shortly thereafter. It was a little overwhelming to be in with the surgeon before the surgery when he went through all the risk "you have a serious problem we need to get taken care of", "one out of every two hundred people that have this surgery die from it." Not exactly comforting odds! The surgery actually didn't take much time at all and went well though. They only had to put in one stent. She was released the next day and has about a two week recovery period at home and a bunch of new medicine. So on Friday I headed back home because Shane's first soccer game was Saturday and I still had lots of work to do for Youth Councils. What an exhausting week!

Shane's best friend from school is having a birthday party the weekend of Youth Councils but he won't be here for it. His Mom had invited Shane and Alexis to a bounce place on Wednesday instead. Chris had to take them since I was out of town. (He took these pictures.) I need to check with the Mom to see if she got any better ones.

A Month Already?

Has it really been almost a month since I updated this? Sorry, Mom! I was doing so good at posting too. I have lots of pictures to share though.

Alexis put a towel around her neck one night and started saying she was Superman. So the next day, when I got home from work Chris had been to Wal-mart and purchased these PJs for her while he was there.

This is what happens when you don't take a nap like Mommy and Daddy tell you too:

We finally got snow!

While I was trying to find my extra gloves in the car since I had to give mine to Shane because he left his in Chris's car, Alexis decided to step off the side walk into the snow.

And that was enough snow for her. She screamed for the next 20 minutes until we finally came in. Later that night she was on the phone with my Dad and told him she didn't like the snow because her boot got stuck and she couldn't move her foot because her boot was going to come off.

Shane was disappointed that it wasn't the right consistency for a snow man. So then he wanted to go for a walk and take pictures of the snow but Alexis wouldn't move.

So we ended up just going in the house and playing Chutes and Ladders.

Shane and I did go for a walk to take pictures after Chris got home. But the sun was already going down by then so we didn't stay out too long because it was really cold.

Unfortunately, we didn't have the option to not stay out very long at Shane's first soccer practice this week. No one told me it was going to be this cold for soccer! Hope it warms up soon.

Hmm . . .not sure what he is doing here. Apparently, he must have thought this was the other game of football, the American kind.

Last night it wasn't quite as cold, but I was still ready to get out of the cold long before it was over. Brrrr.

Alexis had to go with us last night because Chris was out of town but I called Chris to come get her when he got back because it was too cold for her and she kept wanting to wander off on her bike so I couldn't watch Shane.

Shane didn't see Chris come and pick her up so all the way home (the whole five minute drive) he kept asking where she was. I convinced him she rode her bike home. ;)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
